I guess the N must stand for Norwegian.....

The extent of the Danelaw can still be seen on a map of England in the occurence of placenames of ON origin, such as -beck (ON bekkr 'small river', N bekk), -by (ON býr 'farmstead', N by), -thorpe (ON þorp 'small farm', N torp), -thwaite (ON þveit 'clearing', N tveit).
