According to what I can make out, the form "sali"
represents a plural form of "salr" m.
(salr, sals, sal, sal ; salir, sala, salum, sali)
(the declination is then after the pattern of "gestr", q.v.)
It is tempting to read "endlangr" simply as the same word
as German "entlang" (=along). But you have to remember that
"entlang" is an adverb and not an adjective, whereas the
various dictionaries seem unanimous in their judgement that
"endlangr" is an adjective and not an adverb.

In Old Norse there does seem to be a way to create an adverbial
form from the adjective; at least that is the way it comes
across to me in the sentence quoted by Heggstad:
"ríða um endilangt herað" (=to ride the county in its whole length).
At least to me, it here appears very tempting to simply translate
by using the English adverb "along" : "to ride along the whole county".
Whereas a literal reading would give the English translation :
"to ride about the long/lengthy county". (in the example "endilangt" =
acc. sg. n.)

Etymologically, the "end-" prefix should correspond to the well known
Greek "anti-". Some therefore assign the meaning "turned against".
But in another compendium I see that the ON form simply corresponds
to Norwegian "endelangs" *), which doesn't have such a meaning.
(otherwise one might read Sk. v. 3 as Freyr "staring at" [the [empty]
walls] of his halls "all day". (=image of desolation))

Any thoughts?

*) Norw. "endelangs" = all the way through, from one end to the other.
