Interesting that the borrowed form should come from the preterite, in
the light that English has done the same in its Latin and French
borrowings:

promise (< Lat pret "promissum", while pres "promitto")
suspect (< Lat pret "suspectum", while pres "suspicio")
construct (< Lat pret "constructum", while pres "construo")

Et multipula cetera...
