This is part of an old change w ev. in many Rom. l., not just in 1 cluster or 1 l. In pignora > *peNnora > *peNYnra > peyndra OSp, the change NY > y exactly parallels kY > y in fraxinus > freisno OSp. The env. (or in some clusters/l. simple opt.) determines whether C-assim. or KY > y occurred.
