Welsh -ol

Hello,

Does anyone know what the leading theory is on the origin of the Welsh suffix <-ol> (used to form adjectives from nouns: e.g., <gwreiddiol> "original" from <gwraidd-> "root")?

This suffix behaves very similarly to Latin <-a:lis> (as in <anima:lis>, <rea:lis> etc.). Also, as far as I know, Goidelic has no suffix that would be cognate with <-ol>, unlike other adjectival suffixes such as
<-og> (as seen in W. <heulog> "sunny", and in the <-ach> ending of Irish <eirannach>). Is <-ol> thought to be of Latin origin, or have other explanations been offered?

Thanks for any info.
