Names in myth show no more variation than any other words; the dif. is that that variation is more likely to be retained, and can show that the same variation seen in other words is real, retained, and normal (if not regular).

In addition to simple changes like met. in Alaunus vs. Apollo, there are:

Yamá- V Skt;
Yima- Av;

Perkú:nas OLh; perkú:nas Lh;
perún R;

Fjörgynn ON;
Parjánya-s V Skt;

Erin(n)ús G;
Saran.yú:- V Skt;

etc.

The G Erin(n)ús shows e>i with no apparent cause, and indeed the same is seen in:

equus L;
íkkos Ion \ híppos G;

indicating opt. e>i and i>e with no conditions (seen in similar fashion in many other IE, with no environmental regularity at all).

Even though some changes are not very common in any individual language, their spread over all IE and more common occurrence in myth indicates a real and old change.
