It is only a *modern* orthographic adaptation to Polish writing
rules.

But it isn't: his real name was Stern. His father changed it to
Solti. Based on the toponym Solt (today in Croatia) with the
Hungarian place suffix -i (if noble, then -y: cf. Sárközy).
