I didn't believe these two words were connected, but thought about it just in case. The only onset giving G s- and Gmc s- would be PIE ts-, with few occurrences.

The stems

sèL+ \ sàL+; tsLèxY+ \ tsLàxY+ 'be low'

form words for low/crawling/slithering animals, like the dim.:

*
tsLexYmYHá:x \ tsLaxYmYHá:x \ tsLuxYmYHá:x \ tsLxYmYHá:x -ík+ -ik+

li:ma:x 'slug' L; slimák 'snail' R;

*
tsLexYkó+ \ tsLaxYkó+

slie~kas 'earthworm' Lith; slie^ka (f) Latv; slayx OPr;

assuming a met. in dim. * tsLexYkó+ > tseLkxYó+ > silxa+z :

selr ON; seolh OE; seal E;

If < PIE, it's the only pos. I can think of. A seal looks like a slug and moves sim., enough so that the first Gmc people to see one might use such a word, especially if at a time before contact with any one group that already had a word for it.
