Just for the record: I wrote that years ago. Today I wouldn't say that
GL could have operated 2000 BC or earlier. Cultural loans (*kanabi- -->
*xanapi-, dialectal Celtic *ri:g- --> *ri:k-), however rough their
dating on independent grounds, make it clear that GL began and ended
during the "Celtic" Iron Age. The emerging current consensus points to
ca. 500-300 BC, but it has to be kept in mind that GL took place in
stages, and the devoicing of the *b/*d/*g was the most recent of them
(for reasons discussed on Cybalist in the past).
