I should have pointed out that what I actually think happened is a
common non-Uralic, non-IE substrate to both Finno-Ugric (Uralic?) and
IE, namely Kuhn's ar-/ur- language / Schrijver's language of
geminates (which I think is one and the same, so that the defining
characteristic of each (a/u 'ablaut' and voiced/unvoiced/prenasalised
/geminate stop alternation, respectively) both apply to roots f that
substrate.

But you're right, I forgot about that IE noun root.
Here is the whole hunchbacked family, acc. to Pokorny:

'1. (enebh-), embh-, ombh-, no(:)bh- (ne:bh-?), m.bh- ,Nabel',
mehrfach mit l-Formantien.
Ai. nábhya- n. ,Nabe',
ná:bhi- f. ,Nabel, Nabe, Verwandtschaft',
na:bhila- n. (unbelegt) ,Schamgegend, Nabelvertiefung';
av. naba:-nazdis^ta- ,der verwandtschaftlich nächststehende',
daneben mit ar. ph:
av. na:fo:, npers. na:f ,Nabel';
gr. omphalós (Nom. Pl. auch ómphales) ,Nabel, Schildbuckel',
wohl auch ómphakes

omphakís ,der Kelch der Eichel';
lat. umbi:licus ,Nabel',

Vielleicht hierher ags. umbor ,kleines Kind',

Now would you trust that mess to be the origin, rather than result,
of anything? I wouldn't.

And weirdly enough, the root marked 2. in Pokorny, ie. which is
similar to the above, is, with relatives:

'2. (enebh-): nebh-, embh-, m.bh- (Kontaminationsform nembh-);

dazu auch engl. Amber;

Why do we end up in the water all the time?
Within this, IE, context, the UEW's lumping "inside" and "snowstorm"
into one root makes sense
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/cybalist/message/63789
otherwise it doesn't.
