names in Italy? Here in Czechia, one has to learn three systems:
Pinyin, Wade-Giles and the Czech system.

And to Arnaud and other native speakers of French, which system is
used in France?

We used to have the old system EFEO from the Ecole française d'extrême
orient.
It's a kind of heavy and desperate attempt at rendering Chinese sounds in
French.
I'm glad PinYin was invented to replace it !
Some words like Mao TséToung originated in EFEO.
The old Pékin is now most often replaced by PinYin BeiJing more or less read
French-way.
PinYin is more or less gaining ground,
except for traditional names like Confucius.
