I didn't say it works for all. They do however work for many of the
West Highland Clans such as Macdonald, mac Alasdair, Mac Leod, etc. and
for Lowland families of Norman descent such as Bruce and Stewart.

Just one more anecdote to this well-beaten topic which I sent in a self-
centred direction, my apologies:

Concerning the mac Alasdair clan, here in Ottawa we have a local well-
known television reporter named Alastair McAlastair, spelled as I have
spelled it here (and he is black, if that has any importance). Never
thought parents would be capable of such a deed!

I've never come across anyone who ever spelled the last name in Gaelic --Scots Gaelic mac Àlasdair, Irish Gaelic mac Álastair. So that's interesting in and of itself. But there's still time for you to have a Jared Jarrette!
