Because obviously they were too ugly to live, and thus had to resort
to battle in the fields to prevent MacDonalds and others from wiping
out all those ugly crooked mouths (were the Camerons luckier?).

No, the Campbells were "crooked mouths" because they were fighters. The battles between the Macdonalds and the Campbells were over the western highlands and over regional autonomy. The Macdonalds had created a mini-state and the Campbells claimed to represent the crown in its attempts to impose a unitary kingdom. But it was over who would call the shots in the Highlands. The crown usually sat back and let them kill each other off and moved in to pick up the pieces until it got so out of hand they had to send in garrisons.

The Camerons were luckier, in a sense. They were closer to the seat of power and were co-opted by the crown as one of the premier highland regiments. But they became cannon fodder for an imperialist government that sent them all over the world
