Similarly in Polish: <kos'ciól/> (an early Mediaeval loan from Lat.
castellum) for Catholic churches, <cerkiew> (< *cIrIky, -Uve <
*kiriko:n-, an even older loan from Germanic) for Eastern Orthodox
churches, and often formally <zbór> (a semantic calque of Gk. ekkle:sia)
for some Protestant ones.
