The US is basically a rich Third World country. It
lacks the basic infrastructure of economic freedom
found in most other developed countries as well as
some Third World countries. It is in dire need of
positive progressive change. I was in Guatemala a few
weeks ago and was amazed to see the Guatemalan quetzal
had gained 10% against the dollar in recent months.
That told me that the US is in much worse shape than I
ever imagined. The US economy and social
infrastructure, what little existed, has been kept
afloat by the strength of the dollar and by the hordes
of immigrants arriving to subsidize the rest of
America through cheap wages and by paying off our
social security and medicare debt and kindly
succumbing to early death or leaving the country
before they were eligible to draw those benefits. Now,
thanks to the nosedive of the dollar, an official
policy of xenophobia and a series of scams designed to
transfer wealth to the rich and powerful --e.g. the
savings and loans scam of the 80s to the recent
housing bubble, the US is becoming a house of cards.
