Which he, according to the most recent solarship, was not. Nor was
Mitra. As a matter of fact, the old idea that the Vedic Adiyas were
a group of "solar gods" is no longer accepted by Vedicists.

Did I say a 'group of solar gods'?

I do think F. Max Müller was on the right track by connecting the gods with natural forces though they had purely human social functions as well.

I think each of the major divinities in every culture I have investigated can be linked to the sun, moon, or the five visible planets —with the addition of the Northern Circumpolar Region.

Mitra is a 'sun-god'; Varuna is connected with Venus; Rudra is connected with Mars, Bhaga is connected with Jupiter, etc.

Why should they be more important than a thorough philological
analysis of the hymns of the R.gveda?

Because the people of India do not follow the directives of scholars who are, for the most part, not a part of the culture.
