I *have* read Martinet, of course.

I don't remember having a read anything by Martinet where he
says: "I first started thinking about this theory when
leafing through my old Latin school grammar", or words to
that effect. That's just not the way scientific theories are
normally presented, as a first person account of the steps
that led to a certain discovery, in chronological order.
