Zwischen Kelten und Germanen

Wanderungen germanischer Stämme während der vorrömischen
Eisenzeit sind durch antike Autoren überliefert.
Archäologische Hinweise auf eine Besetzung des
Mittelgebirgsraumes und seines südlichen Vorlandes durch
Fremde liefern Grabfunde elbgermanischer Herkunft.

Migrations of Germanic tribes during the pre-Roman Iron Age
are reported by Classical authors. Grave finds of Elb
Germanic origin provide archaeological indications of a
foreign occupation of the Mittelgebirge region and its
southern foothills.

Thus, in the late Iron Age the region came under the
influence of the Celtic Latène culture from the south, while
the Elb Germanic Jastorf culture advanced from the north,
and in the first century BCE the East Germans from the
Oder-Warthe region. The result of these events was a
'Germanization' of the Mittelgebirge region on the northern
edge of the Celtic world. The burial field of Körner in
Thuringia exhibits the interrelationships with exemplary
clarity: its range of artifacts clearly reflects the
different influences between the third century BCE and the
second century CE. Its antithesis is the large burial place
at Mühlen-Eichsen in Mecklenburg, which lies in the centre
of the Jastorf culture and shows no discernible foreign
connections.
