PIE -*C-presents

I have always been puzzled about the _variety_ of consonants assigned the
function of 'present-forming'.

In looking at PIE root 2. *(s)p(h)er-, 'strew, shatter', for which Pokorny
indicates a "d-Präsens", I wondered if it could make more sense to regard a
form *spre-d- as a noun denominalized and pressed into service as a verbal
present.

We certainly do not wonder at the variety of root extension consonants used
to form nouns.

So, first question, presumably for Piotr: has anyone speculated along these
lines before?

Second question, would this make much difference, one way or the other?
