It's really very simple. The i-verbs were the only ones to
preserve the distinction between 2nd and 3rd person sg. in
Eastern Romance (the area where final -s and -t were lost).
In the other verbs (-a:s, -at > -a ; -is, -it > -e; -e:s,
-et > -e) the distinction was lost. Added to that the fact
that final -s becomes -i (-/j/) in monosylables (das > dai,
cras > crai, post > poi), and ecco your new general 2sg.
morpheme -i.
