****GK: Yes, by and large. There's just one context
I'm not too sure about: Babaev's "Sinus" for the Don.
In various copies of Pliny I've consulted this is
rather "Silis". And there is an additional difficulty.
It is quite possible that Pliny may have gotten this
"Silis" from a source about Alexander's exploits which
confused Don and Iaxartes. In NH 6.49, he talks about
"...flumine Iaxarte, quod Scythae Silim vocant,
Alexander militesque eius Tanain putavere esse." Some
interpreters feel that "Silis" can be reconciled with
the older name of the Syr-Darya. But B's Temarunda
analysis seems OK.****

****GK: There's a couple of interesting articles I'm
presently reading. One by Gray(old (1927) but still
interesting in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic
Society. He claims that the Iranian plateau was
earlier occupied by the Indo-Aryans, who were pushed
out by the Iranians, leaving traces of their language
in the latter's speech as a substrate. A more recent
item (1973)by the late Oxford professor T. Burrow (The
Proto-IndoAryans), which I've just started to peruse,
seems to be headed towards a similar conclusion.****
