I've read that Armenian /h-/ is a relic of laryngeals
but that it's not consistent. Can anyone elaborate?

==========

The theory I have learned and which looks good enough
is that
Any initial unvoiced became aspirated
C > Ch
Where there is no initial then zero > h

Zero can come from any previous phoneme
of PIE into proto-Armenian.
H p etc
So proto-Armenian went thru a stage when
there was no laryngeal nowhere
and reorganized something new
where #h has its place.

People who think /h/ is a relic of laryngeals
have not studied Armenian well enough.

pater > ayer > (new) hayr
Is h continuation of PIE H ?
Absurd.
