Excellent!

You hinted once, I think, that there were processes you had in mind that
could have effected a lengthening of the vowel during the passage from
pre-PIE to PIE.

Let us assume that a given *a: in PIE was pre-PIE *a. Could you give me an
idea of what process could lengthen it? - vrdhi will, of course, not be
supremely convincing.
