The point is that it may be possible to project these words
Proto-Romance, but such a projection would be wrong, possibly by
virtue of the history above, possibly by their adoption into late
Latin being too late for Proto-Romance.

I thought the Proto-Algonquian words for 'gun' and 'whiskey' were the
standard examples, but I have heard that there is a deficiency in
these examples. (Unfortunately, I don't know what it is.)
