First, I notice you have written *gHWen- rather than Pokorny's gWhen-; is there any significance to this different spelling?
There is a point to this question. In my system, I propose that *gW = S but that PIE *gh = PAA *g.
I have regarded the initial of this word as a subcategory of *gW, and hence the word cognate with Egyptian Xn (bar-h), 'row'; but if the initial is a subcategory of *gh, namely *gh with a w-glide, it could correspond with Egyptian xn (hook-h), 'direct one's hand against, beat (time)'.
If this were the case, it could correspond with your *gny since the semantics are a very impressive fit.
Turkic _qun_ would suggest to me that the earliest vowel quality was *o/u, exactly what I believe Egyptian x indicates, contrasting with *a/e/I indicated by H (dot-h).
xnj, 'play music', even has the correspondent to the final PS -y in gny.
I agree than the semantics of qana?a do not favor a correspondence.
The various meanings of Egyptian qny, 'yellowness? (probably, better *redness) of the eyes', match up with qana?a much better, IMHO (e.g. 'offense').

Arabic _qana'a_ seems to have the primary meaning 'be intensely red'.
In Hebrew _qn?_ means 'jealous, zealous', and is used for _qanna'i:_
'zealot'.
