It's likely that initial * ( lax- > lx,- ) was retained in PIE but
elsewhere * ( V-CC, > VC-C, then remaining lx, > l,x / nx, > n,x / wn,
> w,n > un ) and all similar cases of more then less sonorant switched
+syllabic to the more sonorant.

In other words, it's almost impossible that many groups would have
special rules for all the word-initial combinations found there
instead of there being a common retention of a PIE disparity.
