Nice story except it's apocryphal --it didnt quite
happen like that. It also purportedly happened at a
time when Germans were only numerous in Pennsylvania.
Elsewhere, they were minuscule and in the US as a
whole they were outnumbered by the French. Even George
Washington was part French.
But the French assimilated very quickly as evidenced
by the bastardization of their last names: d'Aubigny >
Dabney, Cartier > Carter, Xavier > Sevier, Garnier >
Garner, Meuret > Merritt, des Moulins > Mullins, etc.
