It's much more likely metathesis: sthú:n.a:- > stha:n.ú- 'post,
pillar'. There are plenty of cognates for sthú:n.a:-.

Probably from PIE *kar+ 'bent, rough, hard'; *kr,n.ós > Latin
cornus, *kr,n.áH > Middle Indic kin.a-.

I have no reason to think ka:n.a- came from PIE.
