It would be, if Germanic settlement names had survived in the area
later colonized by Slavs (approx. the ex-GDR). There seems to be a
general agreement in the sources I have seen that they didn't.

I see that you have upgraded your assessment of my obsession. ;-)
Cato's was an admonition. Mine is a conviction, but on Popperian
ground, I just think the alternative of a bodenständig Germanic Urvolk
demands too many complicated explanations, in the style of Udolph's
reverse Grimm rule.
