Yes, Saami is Uralic, no one doubts that but a few
years back. Ante said on several postings that the
Saami people orginally spoke another language as
evidenced by substrate --that the Uralic invasion was
an elite replacement. That they are ethnically
different from the Finns. I don't know if he has
changed his mind.
But, on his website, you can see his picture, he is
Saami and to me, he looks pretty generically
Scandinavian.
Cavalli-Sforza, on the other hand does show a genetic
type that radiates out from N. Scandinavia and seems
to correspond to the Saami, as opposed to others. So
there is a strong autochthonous element there.
But, why don't we invite Ante to inform us on this.
