Writing about Liburnian place names, I have noticed that suffix -
issa is very well attested in many cases:
1. GISSA (Plin. NH III 21,25), today isle Pag.
Etymology: This place name, like Lissa dhe Krepsa, Issa, Sissa
(today isle Sestrunj), differently from Lopsica, points to one
paradigm, that makes difference between feminine gender of the nouns
in sa and masculine gender in si. It could be derived from
extended form *geis of PIE root *gei- `to turn, bend'. To this
paradigm belongs also Scardagissa (isle Scard). (Pokorny gei- 354.)
2. LISSA (Plin. NH III 26.), modern Dugi Otok in Kroatia.
Etymology: The name of this isle is derived from PIE root *leis-
`furrow; to attend, learn', like Lisson/Lissum, modern Lezha,
joining so to the nouns in sa.
In both cases it is worth to be pointed out that PIE diphthong *ei >
i has same treatment as in Illyrian as well as in Albanian. (Pokorny
leis- 671.)
