Because x,>a in a syllable with a nasal:

n, > a / _$N
N, > aN / _$R/N/G/X
R, > @R / _$R/N/G/X
xY, mY n, > xY,+nasal n,
X, > +nasal / _ N G
X, > +nasal / $ N _
X > x
x, > @
@+nasal > a
n, > na / V$_#

r, > ar / _#
@ > i

etc.

*mx,kYís 'big, long' > Av masita-, Gk matís

*dhxY,mn, 'pledge' > Skt dhana-, Gk théma

*gYhelxW,nyos 'golden' > Av zaranya- (in Skt mix with
hari-)

It's possible that there are further restrictions
(perhaps n nasalizes any following x(W/Y) but m only
x?).

The examples are in more standard form, I'd say:

mx,kYís dhxY,mYn., gYhelxW,n.yos nx,fwóus
mx,kYís dhxY,mYn., gYhelxW,n.yos nx,fóus
