The h3 of the Hoffmann suffix is there to add o-color in the
appropriate cases. The thematic inflection also has the problem of an
o-colored Nsg that shouldn't be there, so why fix it with a soluton
that is not common to thematic and n-stems, but special to n-stems?
So PIE
*kat-o:-n
*kat-o-n-m
*kat-(e)-n-os
*kat-(e)-n-ei
is no worse than
*kat-os (-oz?, -ons?)
*kat-om
etc
