****GK: The Vepsians are a very small people (there were 16,000 in 1959, don't know how many today), who live in the St Petersburg, Vologda Regions of Russia (and in the Karelian autonomy). They are considered descendants of the mediaeval Ves', an UF nation which was quite important about 1,000 years ago, and is mentioned time and again in the Rus' Primary Chronicle.******

Could you please enlighten me as to what language is this language called Vepsian or Veps?  Where is it spoken?

Thanks,

Andrew

I happened upon a CD that included a song in the Vepsian or Veps
language. One of the verses goes as follows (since this can't handle
hacheks, sh and zh are as in SHould and fuSIon):

Mushtan hebon, mushtan kor'jan,
mushtan, mish me shurguimae.
Mushtan mutsuizhen pertiizhen,
mish me erigean'ziimae.

I remember the horse, I remember the sledge,
I remember(,) where we sledged.
I remember the small farmhouse(,)
where we said goodbye.

The similarity between "hebon" and h1ek^won (even in the grammatical
case!) stood out at once. If this were a borrowing from PIE, then we
have evidence of h1.
