What's the etymology of Argos toponym and anthroponym?

Toponymic: Argos, gen. argous < *Argos, gen. argesos
Anthroponymic: Argos, gen. argou < *Argos, gen. argosyo

Gentilic is argeios (<*argesios, *argeswos?)

The argive genealogies seem to be the fusion of at least four strata:

Stratum I : Pelasgos, born from Earth
Stratum II : Phoro:neus, son of River Inakhos, founder of Phoro:niko:
Stratum III : Danaides and Aigyptides, arriving from the sea.
Stratum IV: Perseus, from Seriphos island; Pelops, coming from Asia Minor.
Stratum V: Heraklides (= Dorian invasion?)

Theban genealogies also show a similar pattern of mixed strata:
Ogygos, born from Earth, witness of Flood
Spartoi, giants born from dragon's teeth (resembling the Sumerian Anthropogony, with man made from the earth blended to the blood of monster Kingu)
Kadmos, hero coming from the East
Lykos and Nykteus, offspring of Pleiades
