It's my invention, based in its primary meaning 'to produce, yield':
Kjo lopë jep 20 litra qumësht 'This cow produces 20 liter of milk',
Kjo mollë jep 100 kile 'This apple tree produce 100 kilos', Kjo arë
jep 1000 kg drithë 'This field produces 1000 kg grain' etc. To my
view, secondary meaning is 'to give'.
I make such proposal as well in Cybalist, even I was objected by
Rasmussen that the meaning of Alb. <jap/ap> is only 'to give', the
fact that I can't accept, taking into consideration that I believe
that the primary meaning was, as testify above examples, 'to
produce'.
If the root was *H2ep-o, in that case the laryngeal will be
preserved, if we take as true Kortland's law that *H2- and *H3- were
preserved before /e/ and were lost before /o/.
