Why did PGmc. *Ge-, *ke- become Eng. ye-, che- but German ge-, ke-? Why
do we have French cent /sa~/ but Sardinian kentu? Perhaps because the
palatalisation of velars before front vowels, though in general very
likely, is not inevitable.
