But it's probably *tetg^h- (needed to explain all
the IE forms, metathesis in most) have a form with o
in the reduplication; why would this o become a; why
k>g?

If this is from PIE the likely origin is *tagsos
"toucher" and possibly reanalyzed as *to-agso- at a
stage when sandhi allowed merger of *sos/to- with a
following V in the next word.
