A member of the word-family derived from PIE *perk^- 'speckle'. Btw, the
similarity of form and meaning between *perk^- and *peik^- is
interesting. Just a thought: aren't we dealing with a case of (pre-)PIE
dissimilation before suffixes containing *r -- e.g. *perk^-ro- > *peik^-ro-?
