*pel- `to sell, to make money'. 1. Alb. <blej> `to buy' probably from
prefixed and suffixed metathetic variant *H1en-+ *ple-n-yo. 2. Primary
meaning seems to be preserved in <mbles> `marriage broker, go-between'
and especially in expression <m'u martue me mblesí> `to be married by
selling, to be sold': Greek polein `to sell': OCS plenu `booty'. For
same semantic exchange see the meaning of Hittite <da:-> `to take' as
a cognate of PIE *deH3- `to give'. From the point of view of the buyer
it is an act of selling, but from the point of view of the seller it
is an act of buying. So, both acts denote same action, as in the case
of giver and receiver concerning the root *do:-. So, this root belongs
to the roots, according to Watkins, that refer to types of exchange to
have some descendants referring to the one half, and some referring to
the other half, of the exchange relationship. (Pokorny 3b. pel- 803.)
