If indeed the *k^ etc was palatal in PIE and not a phoneme with two
allophones, /k^/ and /k/, before front vowels and elsewhere,
respectively, which was later generalised on the basis of the /k^/ etc
allophone in satem and on the basis of /k/ etc allophone in kentum
languages. But we've been there before.
