Well, both factors matter. The Corsico-Sardinian part of Romance was
archaic because it was colonised early, and has (partly) remained
archaic because of its insularity. To be sure, the cultural, economic
and linguistic influence of the Mediaeval sea powers (Genoa, Pisa, the
Crown of Aragon) wiped out some of the conservative traits of the
region, especially in Corsica.
