And even where it was final in OE it wasn't necessarily final in PWGmc.
or even prehistoric OE. The apocope I wrote about took place in words
with at least two syllables following the one with primary stress. A
word like *(kom-)mn.tís > PGmc. *(ga-)munDiz > *(ge-)mundi > OE
(ge-)mynd 'mind' lost its *i after the operation of palatal umlaut, i.e.
_just_ before the emergence of English as a written language. By that
time inherited *D had long become *d in all positions.
