I think that <prosti> is derive from *prok'-ti (Pokorny 4. perk'-
821) and its primary meaning was 'to ask' (cf. prosti devojku 'to
ask for the hand of the girl') with variant praštati, abstract prašta
-nje 'to forgive' (cf. patiti and abstract pat-nja and change patiti
and (is)pašiti).
