"vagina populorum et officina gentium"

Until the construction of railways and later freeways water
transport were the only possible mass freight transport. Freight
transport is the backbone of nations: no transport, no barter, no
wealth, no population, no power. As late as the 17th century Sweden
conquered large parts of Germany. In the 20th century? Forget it.
