I believe the apophonic variation (Ablaut) shows, rather suggestively, that
the suffix is _not_ -*es but rather -*s that has drawn the stress-accent
from the root syllable.

That is interesting because it suggests that the word *CVC was developed
from an earlier *C'VCV.

I have identified this suffix (-*s) from my work as signifying 'state or
condition'.

There does seem to be a suffix with a similar affect in -*s, which is in
rare use to form usually adjectives characterized by color or outward
appearance.
