One case in point (whether "be" is 'really' helf-thematic):
Dutch inflects:
ik ben
jij bent (org. 2nd pl.)
hij is

Afikaans inflects:
ik is
jy is
hy is


In the 19th century institutions the Dutch church in South Africa
used 'proper' Dutch, while everyone else spoke Afrikaans.
