It was originally rather inanimate "gender" (class).
Inanimate pronoun marker was "-d",
(PIE. to-d > Eng. that).

H2 is the "second laryngeal"
(probably voiceless pharyngeal fricative)
which colored preceding "e" to "a".
This is the source of the a-stems
with final "-a" in nominative sg.
