Slavic *sekyra < *seku:r-a: and Lat. secu:ris are no doubt somehow
related. The root is PIE *sek- 'cut', and the suffix -u:r-, while
somewhat mysterious, is surely the same in both. I think I wrote some
time ago about lexical items shared uniquely by Italic and Slavic (and I
mentioned the 'axe' word then). I don't think the <caballus>/*kobyla
corrspondence belongs in the same category: given its status in Latin (a
loan rather than an Italic word) and the only partial match in the
suffix, we are probably dealing with a more recent Wanderwort that has
reached Slavic through a chain of intermediaries.
