I don't see why it's far-fetched to assume that a process that <has
taken place in one language could repeat itself in another one.

How about Armenian s > k' in muk'n "mouse" and the plural suffix
-k' ?

Actually, depalatalisation in Danish, as I see it, was a paradigm
regularisation run wild. In the modern hypermodern theories of sound
change, change behaves just like that: begin in a limited context,
and when the rabble starts to emulate it, you expand its area of
application to keep them in their place.
